What Is Stem Mastering? Fixing What Mastering Can't Reach

If you've had a track mastered and still heard "the lead is buried" or "the mix feels narrow," mastering didn't fail you. You asked mastering to solve a problem it structurally cannot reach.

The one thing mastering can't do

Mastering works on a finished two-track mix. It shapes tone, raises loudness, and controls dynamics. Done well, it transforms a song.

But by the time a track reaches mastering, the vocal and the guitar already live in the same waveform. Boost 3 kHz and you boost the vocal's harmonics, the guitar, and the cymbals together. There is no way to raise only the guitar.

So mastering cannot change the balance between instruments. That isn't a skill limit. It's a structural one.

This shows up constantly in AI-generated music. Generative models produce mixes that are broadly plausible but frequently push one instrument behind the vocal — and since there are no source tracks, you can't simply remix it.

Stem mastering — take it apart, then put it back

Stem mastering (Stem Remaster) inserts one extra step:

  1. Separate the finished song into vocals, drums, bass, and everything else
  2. Rebalance and reposition those parts
  3. Recombine them into one mix
  4. Master that result

Step 2 is the whole point. There, you can raise only the guitar. You can widen the instruments while leaving the vocal centred. None of that is possible on two tracks.

You don't receive stem files

This gets misread often, so let's be direct: separation is the method, not the deliverable. You receive one finished master, and the download set is the same as a normal master — WAV, a lossless FLAC archive, and MP3 320.

When it helps most

  • A lead buried under the vocal — the instrument that enters after the chorus and can't be heard
  • A mix that feels narrow — everything crowding the centre on headphones
  • Uneven drums — the same snare landing loud in one bar and soft in the next

When you shouldn't use it

This part matters more. Stem mastering is not a universal upgrade.

  • Already well-balanced songs — if nothing is buried, there's nothing to fix, and the normal master comes out cleaner.
  • Sparse arrangements — ballads or acoustic tracks with few instruments gain little from separation.
  • Tracks that are already bright — stem processing opens the top end, and in exchange the low-mids sit back a little. A thin song can end up thinner.

That last one is a trade-off, not a defect. We spell it out because going in expecting "strictly better" leads to disappointment. Run both and keep the one you prefer — that's the only reliable test.

How it actually works

A three-to-four minute song usually takes about two minutes. It depends on your machine, and the tab needs to stay open while it works.

If a render fails or you cancel it, you are not charged. So it costs nothing to try it once and compare against the normal master.

FAQ

Do I get the four separated stem files? No. You get one finished master. Separation is part of the process, and the download set matches a normal master — WAV, lossless FLAC, and MP3 320.

How long does it take? About two minutes for a three-to-four minute song. It runs in your browser, so your computer's speed decides the rest.

Is stem mastering always better? No. It helps a lot when a lead is buried or a mix is narrow, but on sparse, already balanced songs the normal master is cleaner. Opening the top end also lets the low-mids sit back slightly.

Does it only work on AI-generated music? No, it works on human-made tracks too. It's simply most useful when you no longer have the source tracks to remix — which is the normal situation with AI-generated songs.

What happens if the render fails? Nothing is charged. A failed or cancelled render returns your credits (or your plan's allowance) in full.

Does this lower AI detection scores? Stem mastering is not an evasion feature. It exists for sound quality and balance; AI evasion is a separate preset.
