Stem Mastering — Fixing What Mastering Can't Reach
August 2026 · 6 min read
If your lead still disappears after mastering, that's not a tone problem — it's a balance problem, and balance is the one thing normal mastering structurally cannot reach. This guide covers how stem separation solves it, and when you shouldn't use it.
#The one thing mastering cannot do
Mastering works on a finished two-track mix. It shapes tone, raises loudness, and controls dynamics. Done well it transforms a song.
But by the time a track reaches mastering, the vocal and the guitar already share one waveform. Boost 3 kHz and you boost the vocal's harmonics, the guitar, and the cymbals together. There is no way to raise only the guitar. Mastering therefore cannot change the balance between instruments — a structural limit, not a skill limit.
This shows up constantly in AI-generated music, where a model produces a broadly plausible mix but pushes one instrument behind the vocal — and there are no source tracks to remix.
#What stem mastering actually does
- Separate the song into vocals, drums, bass, and everything else
- Rebalance and reposition those parts
- Recombine them into one mix
- Master that result
Step 2 is the entire point. There you can raise only the guitar, or widen the instruments while leaving the vocal centred. Neither is possible on two tracks.
| Normal mastering | Stem mastering | |
|---|---|---|
| Works on | Finished two-track mix | Four separated parts |
| Tone · loudness | Yes | Yes |
| Per-instrument balance | No | Yes |
| Processing time | ~10 seconds | ~2 minutes |
| Deliverable | One master | One master |
#When it helps most
- A lead buried under the vocal — the part that enters after the chorus and can't be heard
- A mix that feels narrow — everything crowding the centre on headphones
- Uneven drums — the same snare loud in one bar, soft in the next
#When you should not use it
This matters more than the previous section. Stem mastering is not a universal upgrade.
- Already well-balanced songs — nothing to fix, and the normal master comes out cleaner.
- Sparse arrangements — ballads or acoustic tracks with few instruments gain little.
- Already-bright tracks — opening the top end lets the low-mids sit back a little, so a thin song can end up thinner.
That last point is a trade-off, not a defect. Going in expecting "strictly better" leads to disappointment. Run both and keep the one you prefer — a failed or cancelled render costs nothing, so comparing is free.
#How to run one
Upload your track in the studio and press Stem Remaster. Separation and mastering both run inside your browser; it falls back to our server only if the browser render cannot complete. A three-to-four minute song usually takes about two minutes, and the tab needs to stay open while it works.
#Frequently Asked Questions
Do I receive the four separated stem files?
No. Stem mastering delivers one finished master, not a folder of stems. The separation is how the work is done, not what you download. Your download set matches a normal master — WAV, a lossless FLAC archive, and MP3 320.
How long does a stem master take?
Usually around two minutes for a three-to-four minute song. Separation and mastering both run in your browser, so your computer decides the speed — a newer machine finishes faster. Keep the tab open and in front while it works.
Is stem mastering always better than normal mastering?
No. It helps most when something is buried — a lead lost under the vocal, a narrow mix, uneven drums. On sparse, already well-balanced songs the normal master comes out cleaner. Opening up the top end also lets the low-mids sit back slightly, so a thin track can end up thinner. Run both and keep the one you prefer.
Does stem mastering only work on AI-generated music?
No — it works on human-made tracks too. It is simply most useful when you no longer have the original multitrack to remix, which is the normal situation with AI-generated songs.
What happens if the render fails or I cancel it?
Nothing is charged. A failed or cancelled stem render returns your credits — or your plan's allowance for that cycle — in full. You are never charged for something you did not receive.
Does stem mastering lower AI detection scores?
Stem mastering is not an evasion feature. It exists for sound quality and balance. AI evasion is a separate preset, and mixing the two claims would be misleading.
